Smethurst, Joseph Edward 1951-2026
Joe, passed away peacefully, his wife Herma and his sister Gwen at his side, at Hospice Huntsville on March 22, 2026, following some difficult months with esophageal cancer and a stroke.
Joe was born in Barrie, became a Letter Carrier, then was Proprietor at Dudley's Inn in Bala. In retirement he and Herma moved to North Bay, then Huntsville. Never one to be idle he always had building projects on the go.
He is survived by his loving wife Herma, his dedicated stepchildren, Iria, Stacey(Ben), Nickaldo(Lesa), Andre(Shanora), step grandchildren, Kadeen, Anayah, Dreshan and Kameron, his Mother-in-law Hazel, step brothers and sisters, their spouses and their children. He is also remembered by his siblings, Madeline Taylor(Ian, predeceased), Bob (Susan) and Gwen Pitteway(Poon), nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends. Joe is predeceased by his parents Harry and Helen and his sister, Cathie Renault(Doug).
The family wishes to thank the staff at both the Huntsville Hospital and Hospice Huntsville for their compassionate care.
A Celebration of Joe's Life will be held at the Ferndale Banquet Hall, 24 Ferndale Industrial Dr, Barrie, ON L4N 9V6, Saturday June 27, 2026, 1-4pm. Words of Rembrance at 2 pm.
