Mark Chapman Obituary

Mark Chapman, age 74, died at Muskoka Landing on November 12, 2021, of a rare neurodegenerative disease.

He grew up in Aldershot with his parents, Len and Betty Chapman (both deceased) and his sister, Lynn Watson.  Mark was a family doctor in Oshawa, Kirkland Lake and, finally Huntsville.  Here in this supportive and beautiful community he and Dr. Susan Mitchell raised their two children, daughter Megan (Chapman) Saunders, son Matthew, and their chosen daughter, Joycelyn.

In 1999 he married Dr. Pam McDermott, embracing into his life Pam's step-children: Alex Dussault with his wife, Danielle Pirso, and John Dussault.  Mark was devoted to all his grandchildren (Andrew, Ella, and Max Dussault, Sloane and Griffin Saunders, Karine and Nic Dussault).

Mark was generous, kind and reserved, a man who tended to understate his many accomplishments.  As an example of his many interests and talents, during a gap in his medical career, he, along with his friend Bill Adams, started Sandhill Nursery.

Mark loved his grown children, his "chosen family" of many friends, his many dogs, the Blues, trout streams, all the natural world and , almost above all else, small children.

The family thanks the many people who cared for, befriended and helped Mark in their own special ways.  Muskoka Landing staff on Home Area 3 and Dr. Matt O'Hallaran extended themselves in their care of him.

The family will gather to say goodbye at some future date.  Should you wish, Mark would value donations to Huntsville Hospital Foundation, Algonquin Grace Hospice or Muskoka Nature Conservancy.

We remember Mark's love of quoting his favourite poet, Wendell Barry:  " Be joyful, Though you have considered all the facts!"
