We are heartbroken to announce the sudden passing of Otto Jacob Hiemstra (78 yrs old),
on February 19th, 2026.
Adoring husband of 53 years to Karen (Hutchinson). Loving father of Tracey Tessier, Toby Waddell (Scott), and Ryan Hiemstra. Wonderful grandfather to Orin, Jarod, Emerson, Cole,
and Zoey. Greatly missed by his shadow, Abby. Twin brother of Jake and pre-deceased by brother Peter. Sadly missed by many other family members.
Born in The Hague, Netherlands, Otto immigrated to Canada with his family at six years old. Making their home first in Niagara Falls, then Dalston, and later Midhurst, Ontario.
An alumnus of Barrie North Collegiate, Otto later studied Engineering at George Brown College in Toronto. In 1968 Otto became employed at Cooper Tools in Barrie, where he met
his wife, Karen. Otto enjoyed an engaging career as an Industrial Engineer at DeHavilland Aircraft/Boeing in Toronto, and later Imperial Eastman/Dayco in Barrie and Steve Poole
Restorations in Midhurst. Coming from an artistic family, Otto loved to be behind the camera! He took his camcorder and camera everywhere, and would document get togethers, birthdays, and more. His love of family is evident in his many photographs and videos, often featured in his “Throw Back Thursday” posts on his social media profile. He was a true social butterfly, loved
connecting with neighbours, friends and even strangers he met. Enjoying conversations and sharing experiences.
Once Otto and Karen were empty-nesters, they moved to Coldwater, and then to South River. The beauty of northern Ontario was the dream location to retire. One of the family’s
favourite places is their longtime camping spot, Grassy Lake. Reunions, honeymoons, spring, summer and fall trips were all treasured times at this idyllic location. Otto was
always excited about getting back up there and was counting the days until the next trip.
“Remembering you is easy... we do it every day. Missing you is the heartache that never goes away.”
Cremation has taken place. Donations to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Canada would be graciously appreciated.
