Verta MacDonald Obituary

MacDonald, Verta Helen

Verta passed away peacefully at Huntsville Hospice June 04, 2025, at the age of 95. She was born December 28, 1929, to the late Gordon and Frances Wieler. She was the oldest of six siblings. Beloved wife to the late William “Bill” MacDonald and mother to Robert (Roberta), Jill Bullen, Peter (Sherry), and Patti Cormack (Scott). Also predeceased by son-in-law Lennis Bullen, sister Rhena, mother-in-law Anne MacDonald, father-in-law Neil MacDonald, sister-in-law Betty-Ann Patterson, and beloved companions Ray McEown, and Doug Jones.

Verta loved her family, both extended and immediate. Especially beloved was her immediate family including her 10 grandchildren: Michael, Gordon, Amie, Willis, Quincy, Megan, Courtney, Kyle, Samantha, and Wade. Each grandchild had their special times staying with Grandma (and before his passing, Grandpa) who would treat them to most everything they wanted – she was a softy. She also was blessed to have been able to enjoy and spend time with her 21 great-grandchildren, meeting and having a visit with her newest granddaughter, from Scotland, only 3 days before her passing.

Verta loved to travel and prior to 2020 spent years travelling to many places with Ray, including spending two months each winter in their much loved La Cruz Mexico, enjoying friends, sitting on their deck overlooking the ocean, and basking in the warmth. Other than Mexico, some of Verta’s favourite trips included those to the UK, a river cruise down the Danube, an Alaskan cruise, and visits to her family on Vancouver Island.

Through the years, Verta was an avid and strong bridge player and in her earlier years, curler. She loved gardening and would spend hours digging and planting every summer. Verta also enjoyed reading, knitting, trying various arts and crafts, and socializing with family and friends.

Verta worked mainly in retail most her adult life, but did also have two jobs in the financial world. She worked at Royal Bank in Huntsville as a young woman and later worked at I.A.C. Finance.  Verta worked at Eaton’s for many years, starting in the catalogue office and then later as the head of the wool department. She had many good times there, especially with her dear friend Marion Pavli who she continued spending time with into their retirements up to Marion’s passing. They had been friends since childhood.

Verta’s family want to extend a heartfelt thank you to the wonderful staff at Roger’s Cove in Huntsville where Verta was cared for with utmost kindness and respect. We always knew that Mom was watched over and assisted as things became more difficult. To the staff, you are most appreciated.

A service will be held Friday June 20, 2025, at All Saints Anglican Church, Huntsville, at 1 p.m. followed by a gathering of friends and family at the Royal Canadian Legion at 2 pm.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Algonquin Grace Hospice (Huntsville Hospice), or to a charity of your choice would be appreciated.
